⚠️ Do Not Foam Roll Your Low Back!! 👉 Foam rolling is a great self treatment modality I often recommend to patients; but I always tell patients not to use it on their low backs. 👉 The main reason is due to the shear forces it will put through the vertebra in the low back. Now whilst the low back is an exceptionally strong part of your body this shearing movement isnt a good idea. 👉 Typically the main muscle that contributes to low back pain and stiffness is the quadratus lumborum (QL). Lower back or sacroiliac pain (si pain) is a common complaint, particularly in pregnancy, and postpartum. Hormone changes lead to ligament laxity, and if our muscles aren’t strong enough to keep our pelvis stable, then imbalance and pain often follow. Try adding 10 of these into your daily routine! 🌬Breath and stress 🌬 •We can all feel a little (or a lot) of stress from time to time. Periods of increased stress can set off a cascade of stress hormones that generate physiological changes. • This is known as as our sympathetic nervous system AKA the ”fight or flight” response. In this state of stress Adrenaline flows through our blood stream, causing our body to become solely focused on fighting off what it perceives as a threatening situation. You might notice this response in the way of tightening muscles, a pounding chest, fastening breath or an increase of sweat production. (Being stuck in a Sympathetic response doesn’t sound too crash hot, right?) •Although the sympathetic response is crucial for us to be able to adapt and respond to threatening situations, unfortunately, non threatening situations can also set off this stress response. •Queue the parasympathetic nervous system! ✊🏻 •The parasympathetic nervous system AKA “rest and digest” phase helps our body to calm after a stressful situation. This branch of the nervous system decreases breath and heart rate and increases digestion. (Now that sounds more like it!) •Studies have shown that slow breathing may help shift your body shift towards sympathetic dominance (rest and digest state) •Try aiming for 4 counts on inhalation (breath in) and 6 counts of exhalation (breath out) 🔊 Sound aid can also be helpful. “The Breathing App” uses sound queues to time your breath. •It can be downloaded on your smart phone via the App Store for free! •Reference: Russo MA, Santarelli DM, O’Rourke D. 🤸‍♀️MobilityTime! Our upper back, or thoracic spine can be a big problem area for many people due to static position we find ourselves in 👩‍💻 . Better mobility = Better posture = Better quality in life ✨ . By taking couple of minutes a day and doing 1-3 exercises for your upper back will do wonders. Your upper back and shoulder will not feel as stiff and maybe your headache will go away who doesn’t want that? 🙋‍♀️ . 🎥 Grab a stick and place it behind your neck 👉 lean forward with straight back 👉 than rotate with your arms and try to tuch the floor with the stick. . 🎥 Grab a stick and have in front with wide grip 👉 rotate from side to side 👉 hips should point farward at all times. . 🎥 Go down on all fours 👉 lift the elbow up and then stretch trough 👉 when you reach the floor you lay down on your shoulder and rotate with the other arm straight towards the ceiling .
